Essence of Chicken Drink
Originally uploaded by Tavie
One place we spent a lot of time this weekend was the Asian supermarket on Staten Island. The place is endlessly fascinating, and I'm sorry to say that I took a lot of gross pictures with my phone and sent them directly to Flickr. So, sorry about the cow feet and pig head photos.

The most mysterious item in the Asian supermarket is this "Essence of Chicken" drink It comes in a small box, like tea, and carries a pricetag of $25. There were several brands of this stuff, and all cost $23-$25. What is this stuff? Why is it so pricey, in a place where everything else is so cheap?

Does "essence of chicken" mean something else in Chinese?

Also, because I don't want to bump my last blog post down, IF ANYONE HAS A COPY OF THE SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE/CROSSWORD FROM 10/05/08 (YESTERDAY), PLEASE EMAIL ME!

I know I'm pathetic.
