I think Frank Burns' slow, painful disintegration and exit from M*A*S*H was more depressing than Colonel Blake's death. To have a beloved character die with a clean, if tragic, snap is much better than having a love-to-hate character go gradually mad over the course of a season (or a few, I don't remember), becoming a pale and pathetic ghost of his formerly nasty and arrogant self.

And over Margaret? It's just the most pathetic exit in tv history.
